Azithromycin, also known as Zithromax (in oral form) and Azasite (as an eye drop), is an antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections. This includes ear infections, strep throat, pneumonia, traveler’s diarrhea, and other intestinal disorders. It may also be used to treat malaria in conjunction with other medications. It can be administered orally or intravenously.
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach upset are all common side effects. An allergic reaction, such as anaphylaxis, QT prolongation, or Clostridium difficile diarrhea, is possible. Its use during pregnancy is safe. Its safety during breastfeeding is unknown, but it is most likely safe. Azithromycin is an azalide antibiotic, which is a type of macrolide antibiotic. It works by reducing protein production and thus inhibiting bacterial growth.
