Adapalene is a third-generation topical retinoid primarily used to treat mild to moderate acne, but it is also used off-label to treat keratosis pilaris and other skin conditions. According to research, adapalene is just as effective as other retinoids while causing less irritation. It also has several advantages over other retinoids. Because adapalene is more stable than tretinoin and tazarotene, there is less concern about photodegradation. It is also more chemically stable than the other two retinoids, allowing it to be combined with benzoyl peroxide. Adapalene is superior to tretinoin for treating comedonal acne due to its effects on keratinocyte proliferation and differentiation and is frequently used as a first-line agent. Galderma, a Swiss company, sells adapalene under the brand-name product Differin.
